Medicare Enrollment Periods

What is the Annual Enrollment Period? When can I first enroll in Medicare? These are just a couple of the common questions Medicare beneficiaries have when it comes to getting covered. There are five time frames in which you can enroll in or change your existing Medicare plans, all of which have different qualifying factors. Learn more about the different Medicare enrollment periods below.

Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first time you’re eligible to sign up for Medicare, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and lasts until the three months following it. During this time, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B.

Medicare Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

There are a few different ways to become eligible for a Medicare Special Enrollment Period (SEP), but during this time, Medicare beneficiaries can enroll in Original Medicare or enroll in or change Medicare Advantage coverage.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs annually from January 1-March 31 and gives Medicare beneficiaries currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan the chance to make a one-time plan change.

Medicare General Enrollment Period (GEP)

The Medicare General Enrollment Period (GEP) is the opportunity for Medicare beneficiaries to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B if they didn’t sign up when they were originally eligible. The General Enrollment Period runs annually from January 1-March 31, and individuals who enroll during this time will have coverage beginning July 1. It’s important to note that if you did not enroll in Medicare coverage when you were first eligible, you could be subject to late enrollment penalty fees.

Medicare Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan (AEP)

Also known as the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), the Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan runs from October 15-December 7 every year and is an opportunity for Medicare beneficiaries to change or enroll in Medicare Advantage plans.
